Investing in Safety

We complement our commitment to safety with an uncompromising stance on investment: we will invest what’s required to achieve best international standards.

Recent major, but thankfully rare, accidents within the industry highlighted the need to re-inforce terminal safety. That’s why we invest in training and communication, as well as an increased focus on automation. For example, following evidence from the fire at the Buncefield terminal in the UK, VTTI is retro-fitting, where appropriate, independent overfill alarms and level gauging.

A crucial role is increasingly being played by our proprietary TOMCAT software system, which integrates every facet of a terminal’s operation. As we roll this technology out, TOMCAT will identify which preventative maintenance tasks are due, when they should take place and the tools and parts they demand. The system will also require all risk assessments and precautions to be carried out before it can issue a Permit to Work.

Our plant at Fujairah is both a terminal and a refinery. Siavash Alishahpour, General Manager, comments: “It is our mission to embed a safety culture in everyone, every day. One way we are achieving this goal is by implementing HSE, Operations and Maintenance manuals which lay down clearly and exactly what is expected in approaching key tasks.”

A comprehensive Inspection and Safety Audit is also underway, categorising every action into low, medium, high or unsafe procedures. Workers also understand the importance of Permits to Work, and are positively encouraged to report any issue or practice that may concern them.

Siavash adds: “At Fujairah, we believe that everyone should be a Safety Officer – no matter what their actual job may be.”

This attitude has led to some clearly improving trends in HSE, including 806,386 safe man-hours without a lost time incident; an increase in near-miss reports (from 15 to 91) showing a good awareness and willingness to report issues; and a dramatic decrease in total reportable cases (19 in 2007) to just one in 2008.
