What does an application support officer do?

We coordinate software applications. I oversee the frontline IT support for our enterprise resource planning (ERP) system. I’m also responsible for the work programming of our maintenance team.

Did you start your VTTI career in IT?

Not at all! I started out on the jetties as an operator and then moved to the central control room. Later, I switched to Customer Service, 18 months later a great job came up in ITank, VTTI’s IT support company. I didn’t imagine myself working in IT, but I’m so glad I took the opportunity.

Is that a typical career path in the company?

In our company, people are encouraged to create their own future and you will receive the support and tools to do just that.

Has there been a particular challenge or highlight?

I was asked to go to BCT, our new terminal in Cape Town. I had to analyse the Operations and Customer Service departments and supervise and train them in the ERP system during the terminal’s start-up phase.
