Vincent Li

Business Development and Growth, Singapore

Vincent, please tell us about your journey at VTTI.

I am a Business Development Manager in the LNG Growth team for VTTI, located in Singapore. I originally joined VTTI during my time in the Netherlands, where I moved to 18 years ago. About five years ago, I was working in finance and felt ready for a change. Fortunately, the opportunity came up to work in acquisitions and financial modelling at VTTI.

I moved to Singapore to support the global LNG team with our growth plans for Asia. My experience from my time in the Netherlands comes in handy, I enjoy acting as a bridge between headquarters and our assets in Asia.

“As part of the growth team, we are fortunate that the company has ambitious goals for us. Whenever there’s a project, I feel I have a high degree of ownership and scope to influence the outcome.”

What kind of work do you do every day?

My role is quite varied; it depends on the project. When a big project is underway, I provide updates to our European colleagues to pick up at the start of their working day. In turn, I collect the replies when I start my working day. The close contact between colleagues in different time zones has been great for developing our working relationships.

Outside of projects, the days follow a more familiar pattern. Mornings are spent meeting with local stakeholders and customers, while afternoons are spent preparing to communicate with HQ. We often take business trips to China to meet key players in our markets, lasting between one and five days.

Sometimes we shuffle our priorities. The LNG team covers the whole world, so we can work on projects anywhere. When I worked in Rotterdam, I spent a lot of time liaising with our assets in South America, so I’m used to working internationally. After all, it would be boring to focus on just one location!

How have you found the working environment at VTTI?

As the growth team, we are fortunate that the company has ambitious goals for us. Whenever there’s a project, I feel I have a high degree of ownership and scope to influence the outcome.

The attitude at VTTI is very proactive. ‘What can be done?’ is often the first question, not ‘why should we do this?’. To use a common Dutch expression, we all have our noses pointing in the same direction!

The leadership team takes a keen interest in our work, which definitely helps to move things forward when we start working on a project. It helps to build camaraderie when we know how far we have all come together.

What have been the highlights of your career at VTTI so far?

Our team is going from strength to strength. It can be hard work, but there have been many highlights along the way: travelling back to Europe to be with the team and spending time meeting our customers and shareholders face-to-face. It’s been great to see the confidence that management has in us: they are very approachable and like to get involved. VTTI is a very close-knit organisation, and the culture is refreshing for anyone used to a more corporate environment.
